Jeremiah Gibbs

Rev. Jeremiah W. S. Gibbs
Interim Chaplain & Director of the Lantz Center for Christian Vocations & Formation
University of Indianapolis
Indianapolis, IN 46227
(317) 788-3233

Jeremiah is a graduate of Eureka College (2005) and Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary (2007) and he is preparing to take qualifying exams for the Ph.D. in Theology and Ethics at Garrett. His ecumenical sensibilities are displayed in his blog where he identifies himself as ‘. . .an Assemblies of God minister who graduated from a Disciples of Christ college and a United Methodist seminary and wants to be an Emergent thinker.’ While in seminary, Jeremiah served as Youth Pastor and/or Director of Young Adult Ministries for United Methodist congregations in Wisconsin and Illinois. More recently, Gibbs has served as an Adjunct Instructor for Oakland City University and Research Assistant for the Stead Center for Ethics and Values at Garrett.

Jeremiah brings an uncommonly rich background and varied interests to this nine‐month interim position. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve (1996-2003). While he a licensed minister of a Pentecostal denomination, Jeremiah also has made it his purpose to learn about the liturgical traditions of Roman Catholicism and the Greek Orthodox Church. He is quite familiar with various historic protestant and evangelical groups. Jeremiah brings many gifts to the work that he will be doing alongside University Chaplain Lang Brownlee during the 2009-2010 academic year.* He is the author of several articles including the piece ‘Explain Yourself: Making Belief Intelligible’ The Christian Century (September 23, 2008) co-authored with Jason Byassee. Jeremiah&quo;s blog explores various topics including the relationship between liturgy, aesthetics and ethics as well as the prospects for the &lsquuo;emerging church&rsquuo; movement.

Jeremiah is married to the Rev. Jenifer Stuelpe Gibbs, who is Associate Pastor of First United Methodist Church in Bloomington, Indiana. Jeremiah and Jen live in Bloomington. Please join the staff of the EIP office in welcoming Jeremiah to the University of Indianapolis.

*Please Note: During this same period, Dean Michael Cartwright will be convening a review process that will look at the long-term needs and prospects for co-curricular religious life programming at UIndy. Members of the UIndy faculty and staff as well as students will be invited to reflect about what we have accomplished over the past twelve years since the creation of the Lantz Center (1998-99) and the Office of Ecumenical & Interfaith Programs (2002-2003). This review will also consider current needs and future prospects at UIndy. Stay tuned for more details.
